San Gimmi!

Monday April 2nd

Today we are going to one of the most anticipated sites of our trip, the walled medieval Manhattan, San Gimignano.  We have referred to this town as many things along the way: San Gimi, San Parmasiano, San Chimmi Chunga, Gimi  Gimi.  Whatever you want to call it, this place is awesome.  Historical records for the village date back to the 10th century, but the Etruscans inhabited the site back in the 3rd century BC.  San Gimi was ideally located on a trade route between the north and south, with the fertile lands surrounding the town the merchants of the town became quite wealthy.  The towers were built as a symbol of their prosperity, and for their protection against invasion.  At one point there were 72 towers that graced the Tuscan skyline, now only 13 of varying heights remain.

Before heading off to San Gimignano we stopped off at out local pitch in Buonconvento to kick our new mini ball around.  Sadly our game was cut short when Bronwyn, I mean Shebrahemovich, blazed one over the net and it got stuck in the fence.

The hallowed grounds of Buonconvento.

Shebrahimovich asseses the situation.  Fin sporting his new boats walks away in disgust.

Both players were very dejected when the decision was made to leave the ball and move on.

A very cool looking, but VERY stinky cheese shop located in the centre of San Gimi.

The Frog in the Well is catching on.  A young lady joins the search.

A few of the remaining towers located in the village centre.
We all made the hike up the tallest tower (and only tower the remains open) to check out the view.

Still searching...
